Dubyadubyadubya dot georgedubyabush dot com

I guess George W. Bush's view is that American politics do not concern or influence me since I don't live in the US.
That's why his official re-election campaign website:

http://www.georgewbush.com

is BLOCKED from outside the US.

They claim traffic problems and fear of hacker attacks...

Well you shouldn't have chosen IIS now, should you?

Kiosks

In total contrast with the last Kiosks I set up, this time things went rather smoothly...

We had to set up 2 pcs with 2 separate monitors both playing full screen flash movies in fullscreen/kiosk mode....Plus a way to save registration details etc.

Linux to the rescue again.. A vanilla Fedora Core 2 install, set up httpd +mysqld+php for the whole registration data part and set up the machien so it autologins to a kiosk account, runs X with no WM and opens 2 mozilla windows (one on each monitor) with different profiles so that they open a different homepage...

Done :)

Sick...

Today I woke up feeling crap...
Stuffed nose, sore throat, coughing fits. Probably a fever too but I haven't bothered checking... I just took two paracetamols preemptively instead..

Went to work because we had our weekly meeting and to make sure that nothing major/urgent was happening and left to come home...

So now I'm staying in wrapped in a blanket, sneezing and doing a little bit of work and research while listening to music...

I just wish I could breathe a bit easier

Windows Installs

Where did this rumour that Windows is easier to install than Linux get started?

A simple work system, with Windows + drivers for everything + Web/Image/Video editor + Office took me about 5hrs and countless reboots

I've timed a full Fedora install and it's always taken me around 30 mins for the equivalent set up (software-wise) and a single reboot...

Obviously Gentoo is a different animal since setup takes ages but it saves so much more time in the long run that it doesn't matter...

Shopping...

Yesterday I went to the computer store and bought a Samsung SyncMaster 710v 17" LCD monitor to replace my old and ailing Gateway EV700...
WOW! It's like night and day.... Very very happy with it and finally I can work at 1280*1024 at home as well

I also bought some stuff to upgrade my brother's PC. An Asus P4R800-V Deluxe motherboard, a Prescott P4 3.0Ghz, a gig of ram and a 120gb WD hard drive.

Unfortunately, turns out that one 512mb stick of ram was faulty... Everything, from simple booting to trying to install XP was messing up. Thank god I had a gentoo livecd, booted MEMTEST and found out quickly....

The upgraded PC works fine but the stock Intel fan is SO noisy...and the Prescott runs really hot...

I had the same problem with my Northwood 3.2 and I eventually changed my case to an expensive thermaltake one just to get it a bit quieter....

I think i need to switch to Macs....

At work...

Things are relatively slow today...
Took the opportunity to play with an Ubuntu linux install...
Didn't really like the installation procedure...There's much better installers out there...
Also did not like the concept of a deactivated root account...

I guess I'm just too used to the Gentoo ways of doing things lately...

Tried the new version of phpMyAdmin....Nice new theme and SQL history... Worth an upgrade :)

FRSIT PSOT!!!!

Hello world!

My first blog.... A few years late jumping onto the bandwagon but what the hell?

Better late than never I guess...

Let's start with out first typical blog entry:

Lately I've been trying to think of a cool project to work on in my spare time (coding project ofcourse... a true geek would accept no substitute)

I was thinking of doing a basic/generic content management that would be administrated by a XUL interface... But I've never worked with XUL, there seems to be no Visual IDE (where I could create a couple of simple things and look at the resulting code) and I'm a lazy sod... So that's one plan scrapped...

Then I thought of playing around with PHP5 for a bit but my linux box at home has been acting up after the latest kernel compile, freezing for no reason whatsoever and I can't seem to find what's wrong yet... Thus, running apache/php5/mysql4 on it and developing ain't gonna happen until I get that sorted out...

I should really take this opportunity of wanting to code to learn either some other scripting language or (finally) C++....

Anyone have any ideas?
You at the back?
No? ...didn't think so...

Other than all that everything seems to be going quite smoothly...nothing too scary at work (yet) thank god...
